In the waning hours of 2011, i will change my webpage. I will look at the past year and give you my perception of things past and what yet may be.
I think Time Magazine naming "The Person of the Year"as the protestor, got it right. Fromthe Middle East, to Europe, to right here in our own country we are beginning to see their impact and it is still an unfinished chapter. In the Middle East we have seen long standing dictatorships swept aside by popular uprisings caused by the harsh crackdown on the protestors. In Europe leaders have resigned and Governments have changed. In our own country we have seen the Occupy Movements spread from Wall Street to Main Street in cities and towns accross our Nation. Many in power said" Don't worry, as soon as it gets cold they will go home". That hasn't happened. Many no longer have homes to go to. One sign i read said" you have taken my home, my job and my future. I fear nothing!" Evicting the protestors from one place to another in an attempt to destroy their cohesion is doomed to failure. Like one protestor said" You can't evict an idea!" Rational, educated, thinking people are taking off their blinders, putting aside their apathy and saying"Something is not right. What has happened to the Middle Class and the American Dream?" It's not a dream of being "Filthy Rich", but the dream of working hard and being able to support their families and not retiring into poverty. A hope that their children will have oppourtunities for jobs, education and a chance to succeed. That is the essence of the American Dream. Dithering by memebers of Congress and not working to create meaningful jobs that a person can support their family on, adds fuel to the protests. Scapegoating and blaming the Unions for the mess in this country is an attempt by the culpable to shine the spotlight away from the guilty. Unions are the reason a middle class exists in this country. The rising tide of prosperity of the last two decades, that should of lifted all the boats, have only lifted the boats of the wealthy 1%. If the wealthy 1% are as some claim"the job creators" then where are the Jobs? Some of the enlightened 1% see the problem. As Warren Buffett said" My secretary pays more taxes than I do, raise my taxes!" A gated community of opulence is still a prison if you can't safely leave it.These are my opinions, and if you bothered to read this far, take a minute to ponder and then make your own decisions.
Now to look ahead. Someone that brings you a problem and leaves without offering a solution, has just left you with a problem. In the way of a solution I offer this; and its in our hands and not the politicans. When I go to the store to buy something I check for country of origin. if it's from China I search for a product made in the USA or Canada. If the merchant can't offer me an alternative to a Chinese product I don't buy it and do without. I have nothing against the Chinese People but I do have a problem with the huge trade imbalance in their favor. If we are OK with child labor and servitude there, we will soon be faced with it here, without a strong labor force to protect our laws. If you don't believe this look how the same corporations here treat their employees in countries without Labor Laws.
Help from Congress should come in the form of removing the tax incentives they have provided to corporations to give away our jobs. As voters we need to educate ourselves and remove politicans that only do the bidding of the corporations and not the American People. We all need to have an active voice in what happens in Our Country. It's time to wake up. What we hold in our hands is, our future, our childrens future and the future of our country.
