I was born and raised in Spokane I lived there until the early 1970’s. I started in the Elevator Industry in 1973 in Spokane. I worked for Montgomery Elevator for almost 6 months and was laid off. This was a time period when there was not much work in Washington so In1974 moved to southern California looking for
work in the Elevator industry. I soon found out that construction was slow all over the west coast. I was hired again in 1975 by US Please Elevator back in Spokane but again I was laid off before I got my 6 months in. From the time I was 18 until I finally got into the eleva
tor industry in 1979 I worked many jobs. I worked as a dish washer and for a roofing company to name a few. When the call came that there was work in Seattle I packed up what little I had and headed for the big city. I had known from the start that I wanted to be a part of this great trade. My Father my Uncle and one of my Brothers were already members of Local 97. When I came to Seattle was eager to learn and I was very fortunate to have many mentors that taught me along the way. There are too many to list but I thank you all. The knowledge that you shared with me was instrumental to my success in this trade. In 1983 I sat for and passed the Mechanics exam. From 1983 to 2008 I have worked construction, repair, service, and modernization. I found for me modernization was what I enjoyed the most.
I started attending union meetings as soon as I was initiated and in 1988 I was elected President of Local 19. From 1988 until present I have had the honor of being elected as an officer of local 19. I have served as President, Correspondent to the journal, Executive board member, and at the present time Business Representative. I have always felt the need to give back to this great union as it has given so much to me. At the present three of my Brothers and my Son are members of Local 19 and I expect that there will be more in the future.
I would like to urge all of the members of local 19 to get involved with your union. As we move into the future we will need new leaders. There are many ways to get involved and the more members that participate in union affairs the stronger it makes us all. This is your UNION and its future success will depend on the decisions that the members make. If we are united we will remain strong. Divided we will surely beg.
WORK SAFE
Fraternally yours:
Steve Wood
