The International Union of Elevator Constructors
What to Expect and How to Apply
What to Expect:
- An apprenticeship in the IUEC is approximately 5 years, with 4 years of in-classroom schooling. This schooling runs concurrently with working in the field as an Elevator Constructor apprentice, under the guidance of a licensed Elevator Constructor. The apprenticeship is, in total, the combination of weekly schooling and daily on-the-job (OJT) training/employment.
- Schooling for apprentices is administered via NEIEP (the National Elevator Industry Education Program) with classes administered in the evenings at the IUEC Union Hall, and satellite classrooms all over Local 19. Apprentices do not pay for their schooling.
- New apprentices have a 1-year probationary period before becoming fully inducted members of the IUEC.
- New Probationary Apprentices do NOT have benefits for their first 6 months. After successfully completing 6 months of 100 hours, they become benefit eligible. When an apprentice completes a total of 12 months at 100 hours in an 18-month period, they become a member.
- Apprentice pay rates are set by a percentage of journey workers' wages.
- Probationary: 50% Mechanics Wage Scale
- First Year Apprentice: 55% Mechanic Wage Scale + Fringe Benefits
- Second Year Apprentice: 65% Mechanic Wage Scale + Fringe Benefits
- Third Year Apprentice: 70% Mechanic Wage Scale + Fringe Benefits
- Fourth Year Apprentice: 80% Mechanic Wage Scale + Fringe Benefits
- At the completion of the apprenticeship program, apprentices are required to sit, and pass, their state licensing exam. A successful completion of this exam marks the end of the apprenticeship and marks the individual as a journey worker in the IUEC.
